Christoph Girardet & Volker Schreiner

Christoph Girardet (born 1966) and Volker Schreiner (born 1957) examine in their video “Fiction Artists” (2004) the portrayal of artists in the medium of film. The individual scenes assembled by Girardet and Schreiner in thematic cinematic montages were taken from more than 100 films – Hollywood classics as well as B-movies. All told, three chapters from the 12-part work are individually presented in conjunction with the exhibition “into it.” While “On View” and “Space on Light” focus on the viewers’ reactions ranging from horror to divine adulation, “The Hidden Masterpiece” gathers dramatically staged creative crises. The myth of the genius and the absolute work survives on the screen in a concentrated form through the ruminative, sacrificing, self-agonizing, destructive artist. The picture sequences illustrate how biopics (biographical pictures) about artists still influence our stereotypical ideas about artists as well as their lives and works today. Girardet and Schreiner lay bare these stereotypes by means of isolating them and making them a parody of themselves by arranging them sequentially.
