Michael Beutler

Michael Beutler (born 1976) always reacts to site-specific exhibition situations in his works. The architectonic space essencely determines the form and aesthetics of his installations. He develops modules with simple means and functional materials such as paper, metal, wood, and plastic foil that are assembled spatially in accordance with the situation in question. The development process per se is important for Beutler . For this reason he usually makes most of his decisions while installing the exhibition itself. The artist understands this state of temporary uncertainty in addition to the integration of assistants into the artistic process as an opportunity and as an important component of his work. His sculptures are given an experimental and intuitive gesture through this approach as well as by their home-made appearance. By using simple construction materials and buildings methods and doing without any industrial products, he additionally enables the viewer to comprehend the evolution of his installations in regards to time as well as form. Beutler has installed a new piece made of sand and fabric (Kehrwieder Crouchet, 2007) for the exhibition “into it” on the forecourt of the Kunstverein.
