Ana Roldán

Ana Roldán’s (born 1977) multi-media works from the areas of installation, objects, graphic symbols, and videos often evolve from an interest in the examination of systems such as collective memory and the conditions of language, and signs in relation to metaphysical and philosophical questions. An essential element of her formal works is observation itself, human perception, and the need for the allocation of meaning and interpretation. Her installations constantly place it before open situations that always contain an aspect of the narrative and the puzzling. Ana Roldán produced a video (Actor, 2007) as well as a fictitious card game for the exhibition in the Kunstverein. Not without cause Roldán described this game as follows: “Every reaction is more determined by the momentary situation as by the talent of all players.” Comprising four main figures (Magician, Queen, Cook, Beast) symbolizing our social structure, she designed a display and a consistent fictitious game system for two persons that is however presented without rules. Only the 32 black-and-white cards (digital miniature drawings) show the way and provide indications about the context as well as a possible set of rules. An eerie feeling of uncertainty coupled with curiosity can overcome the viewer while looking at the game.
